Volunteer Week
April 21, 2009
The observance of Volunteer Week is a great reminder for non-profit agency's everywhere to say THANK YOU to those selfless community members who donate their time and talents to us.
We, at ASN, have a particular need to say thanks. Twenty-five years ago, a small group of volunteers came together to start the "AIDS Patient Support Group", a grass-roots response to AIDS in our community. Offering "someone to listen, someone to lend a hand, a friend when a friend is needed, confidentiality, referrals and education" (taken from one of their first handouts), the organization formed the core commitment of the agency as it stands today. We have gone through changes - even of our name, but without the fore-sight and dedication of these volunteers, the AIDS Support Network of today would certainly not exist.
Over the years, volunteers have played essential roles in our successes and, most importantly, in the lives of the clients we serve. Volunteers have done a little bit of everything for our clients - taking them to a doctor, housekeeping, making healthy meals, pet-sitting, running errands, gardening chores, home repairs, being a buddy, to name a few. They are the people who answer our phones 40 hours a week, tend to the Grove, staff food drives, grow vegetables for us to distribute through the Food Pantry, counsel our clients on nutrition, sit on our Board. I could go on and on.
This is just a small gesture - a tiny thank you compared to the huge amount of work that has been done by this amazing group of people. We are indebted and we appreciate all that each and every volunteer has done for us.
